Standardizing business processes can be a daunting task. Considering the number of plant design software applications available to EPCM’s it can be an arduous task to integrate with internal business applications, departments and deliverables. Project Controls, Estimating, Management and Document Control are a few of the internal disciplines that demand specific deliverables at specific times regardless of the plant design software configuration used by Engineering. Compounding this effort is the increasing requirement to utilize client configured tools which do not always allow for customizations favoring individual EPCM requirements.

Brownfield Solutions is pleased to present their perspective on the challenges facing today’s Owner / Operators. Brownfield will discuss how the integration of engineered information can be effectively used and maintained to gain substantial costs savings through the plant lifecycle. As well, they will speak about the Benefits of Reliable Engineered Information, Getting to a Structured Asset Information Environment, Engineered Information Integration and Who Uses the Information in Operations.

As reported in CII RT 272 Phase I (2009-2011), companies have been implementing a number of varied work packaging practices at different stages of the project lifecycle with emphasis on the construction phase. The Advanced Work in AWP is about the benefits of extending work packaging based thinking and execution strategy to the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) and the Detailed Engineering (DE) phases. The final version for Advanced Work Packaging released as CII/COAA IR-272 put forth a structured approach for construction centric design and validated productivity improvements on project. The role of technology systems – 2D, 3D, modern databases etc. remained to be explored and factored in successfully executing projects. When 3D modelling was introduced in early 90s in EPC, it increased the collaborative power amongst the engineering disciplines. It enabled early interference detection, automated MTOs and drawing production…..

The new age SPF based Intergraph systems and in particular, SPC can be utilized as an essential project and construction management tool that brings the owner, engineering, construction, supply chain and project controls together early on the project. In the process, it can reveal the flaws and issues early on that usually would not have been known until the project has entered the execution or turnover phase. If the systems and project environment is setup giving due consideration to package based execution at the early stages, work package production can become an easy/auto-generated output of this system. Some organizations may have to unlearn some of their old ways. Those organizations who move faster in collaborative project execution methods that span across owners, contractors and suppliers will have an advantage as a common way of doing business.

In Western Canada’s oil sands industry, the project controls discipline has traditionally used Excel spreadsheets as its main tool.This approach requires analysts to gather, manipulate and report on complex data manually.In 2013, Calgary-based engineering firm Vista Projects decided to implement commercial project controls software. Recognizing the potential long-term benefits, Vista knew the solution needed to be flexible enough to meet each client’s unique preferences and specifications, yet still able to provide rigor, standardization and auditability to core project components.Vista selected EcoSys due to three main benefits: it significantly reduces the risk of errors, gives project controls specialists more time for analysis, and provides more accurate and timely data. Four years later, Vista has used EcoSys to execute over 300 oil sands facility projects with a combined total installed cost (TIC) of over three billion dollars.In his presentation, Managing Partner Patrick Reilly will discuss Vista’s EcoSys implementation, how Vista uses EcoSys for project controls and how it fits in with the company’s broader vision of a digital approach to project execution….

Traditionally, the results of gas dispersion, fire and explosion modeling from Phast are contained in standalone reports produced by external consultants. Phast results are integrated into the engineering workflow by importing Phast results into the 3D model. This achieves significant benefits in the design process.The process to import Phast results will be outlined along with the impacts this has on the engineering workflow.

Using .net and Llama Automation layer, I devolved a Line List database application that bridged the gap between lines on the marked up P&ID’s and the SPP&ID database. We are using this application to assign new line numbers, calculate process conditions, calculate velocities, compare data between marked up P&ID’s with the SPP&ID database and generate the Line List from SPP&ID using Llama. A key feature of this application is the ability to track changes to the Linelist. This enables us to compare the versions to see what changes occurred and who made the changes. Another way we use the automation layer to generate different display sets within SPP&ID, based on the data from the line list. In this session I will show you how these applications were implemented and improved our work process.

This session will highlight how SmartPlant Materials can be successfully adapted to work as a constructors tool for identifying and scrutinizing material shortages.

Skill and talent shortages combined with a relentless pressure to maximize profitability on increasingly complex capital projects has led many companies to reduce the size of their operational workforce and turn to an EPC model for project delivery. EPC firms today bear an enormous amount of responsibility and risk for projects. And due to the large number of owner/operators EPC firms report up to, and the varying projects they manage, the standards EPC firms have to manage their projects by are much more complex. In the Oil & Gas industry in particular, sinking commodity prices have led to many owners slashing capital spending budgets creating a very competitive environment for EPC firms. This session will focus on the unique challenges EPC firms face and include a live demo of EcoSys EPC to show how project controls can help manage gross margins and drive profitability for EPC projects regardless of contract type.

Project Manager at Antofagasta Minerals, Raúl Romero, decided to use Intergraph Smart technologies to optimize a shutdown plant execution. This presentation shares the results as a Chilean Mining case study from the Óxidos Encuentro Project (OXE). This project is a mining facility for the copper deposit located in Chile, specifically in the Antofagasta province, 80km to the southwest of Calama. The field conditions in an operating plant with high ignition levels (140°F) restricted work that may generate sparks. Areas had complicated access and limitations of space to work. Moreover, there were undetected interferences within the original design (2D Engineering) and other issues in engineering execution and spool installation…

The team strategized to use an integrated approach involving Laser scanning, Smart 3D and SmartPlant Construction. Starting with a 3D laser scan of the 1st Shutdown area (point cloud), they converted the 3D point cloud to a 3D Model as-is, used Smart 3D for modeling using the original engineering done in 2D drawings. The project used SmartPlant Construction to integrate design, execution planning, package creation and executed the shutdown delivering outstanding results: Reduction of approximately 20% hours in the plant shutdown execution (from 72 hours to 58 hours); Ease of owner personnel and contractors induction of the erection sequence; The early planning guaranties decreasing the risk during the plant shutdown execution; Allows performance calculation and personnel estimation by work front; Impacts due to engineering modifications were eliminated; Fabrication priorities of materials were stablished.


Working the details of the low voltage distribution panels in SmartPlant Electrical was challenging before the release of SPEL 2015. The implementation of the automation layer coming with this version of the software has opened endless possibilities. At Catch Engineering, we believe in the use of the technology to improve quality and gain efficiency in our workprocess. This is why we invested in creating an application that allows SPEL designers to simplify the workprocess around LV distribution panels, permitting the creation of panels through a very friendly interface, allowing at the same time the generation of various project deliverables such as panel schedules. During this sessions, the application for LV panel management will be shown, providing examples of its use, and remarking the benefits not only for the development of detail design activities but also for Owner Operators who will receive such information on a SPEL database for maintenance and operations purposes.

This session will discuss how owners can define effective and workable handover specifications from internal CAPEX operations (using both document-centric or data-centric tools and methods) as well as contractors who use both document-centric and data-centric tools and execution methodologies. The goal is to obtain the best possible body of information to support a solid facility management information system.
